ヨーロッパから東アジアにかけて広く分布しています。わが国へは古い時代に渡来しました。現在では本州から九州に帰化しています。草原や放牧地に生え、高さは７０〜１００センチになります。茎には翼があり、鋭い棘もあります。５月から７月ごろ、紅紫色の小さな花を咲かせます。

キク科ヒレアザミ属の二年草で、学名は Carduus crispus。英名は Welted thistle。

The welted thistle (Carduus crispus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native from Europe to East Asia. This herb was introduced into Japan in the ancient days, and now naturalized westward from Honshu to Kyushu. It grows in meadows and can reach 70-100 cm in height. The stem has wings and acute spines. The small magenta flowerheads come in May to July.
