ヨーロッパが原産です。現在では、世界中の温帯地域に帰化しています。開けた野原や道ばたなどに生え、長さは２メートル以上になります。茎は扁平で、翼があります。葉は２出複葉で、小葉は披針形から長楕円形です。托葉は線形から披針形です。５月から９月ごろ、濃いピンク色から白色の蝶形花を咲かせます。別名で「しゅっこんスイートピー（宿根スイートピー）」とも呼ばれます。

The perennial pea (Lathyrus latifolius) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe, and nowadays naturalized worldwidely in the temperate areas. This herb grows in open fields or roadsides and it can reach up to 2 m long. The stem is flat and winged. The leaves are bifoliate with lanceolate to oblong leaflets. The stipules are linear to lanceolate. The deep pink to white papilionaceous flowers come in May to September.
