わが国の南西諸島、奄美大島から西表島にかけて分布しています。高さは３〜８メートルほどになり、枝は繊細です。葉は長楕円形で、細かな鋸歯があります。１２月から２月ごろ、葉腋に小さな白い花を咲かせます。６弁花で、甘い芳香があります。

ツバキ科ツバキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Camellia lutchuensis。英名はありません。

"Hime-sazanka" (Camellia lutchuensis) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed to the Ryukyu Islands, from the Amami Oshima to the Iriomote Island. This tree grows up 3-8 m in height with slender branches. The leaves are oblong and fine serrated. The small white flowers bloom at the axils from December to February. They are six-petaled flowers and fragrant.
