The "Hime-shajin" (Adenophora nikoensis) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan, and it is distributed northward from Chubu district to southern Tohoku district of Hanshu. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine screes, and it can reach 10-40 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, up to 1.5 cm wide, and arranged in alternate. Those with a width of 1.5 cm or less are called "Hosoba-miyama-shajin", and those with a width of 0.8 cm or less are called "Hosoba-hime-shajin".
