わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに北半球に広く分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の湿原に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。地面を這って分枝し、全体にやや粉白色を帯びています。葉は広線形から長楕円状披針形で、密に互生します。６月から７月ごろ、枝先に淡紅紫色をした壺形の花を咲かせます。

ツツジ科ヒメシャクナゲ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Andromeda polifolia。英名は Bog rosemary。

The bog rosemary (Andromeda polifolia) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido, and widely in the Northern Hemisphere. This shrub grows in sub-alpine to alpine bogs and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The stems are much branched and crawl on the grounds. The whole plant is tinged slightly powdery white. The leaves are broad linear to oblong-lanceolate and densely-arranged alternately. The pale magenta, urn-shaped flowers bloom at the tips of branches from June to July.
