"Hishi-modoki" (Trapella sinensis) belongs to Pedaliaceae (the Sesame family). It is an annual herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. It grows rarely in ponds and marshes, and its broad ovate leaves float on the surface of the water. It also produces cleistogamous flowers underwater. The fruit has four cornua, which act like a razor. The Japanese name is derived from the leaf shape, which resembles a "hishi". The Chinese name is "茶菱" (cha ling).
