わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国東北部、東シベリアに分布しています。山地の湿地に生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は厚くて光沢があり、披針形から広披針形で鋭い鋸歯があります。８月から１０月ごろ、葉腋に白色の蝶形花を咲かせます。花冠は長さ５ミリほどで、下唇は３裂します。中国語では「異葉変種（yi ye bian zhong）」と呼ばれます。

シソ科シロネ属の多年草で、学名は Lycopus maackianus (syn. Lycopus lucidus var. maackianus)。英名はありません。

The "Hime-shirone" (Lycopus maackianus) belongs to Lamiaceae (The Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China and eastern Siberia. This herb grows in montane marshes and can reach 30-70 cm in height. The leaves are thick, glossy and lanceolate to broad lanceolate with acute toothed edges. The white papilionaceous flowers come on the axils from August to October. The corolla is about 5 mm long and its lower lip is trilobate. In Chinese, it is called "異葉変種" (yi ye bian zhong).
