The Himalayan cedar (Cedrus deodara) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the northwestern Himalaya to eastern Afghanistan. It was introduced into Japan in the early Meiji Era (1868-1912). The tree crown is conical and can reach 20-30 m in height. The branches spread out on the level, the leaves are needle-like and fasciculate. The female flowers bloom in the upper terminal twigs and the male flowers bloom in so many places in October. The fruits are ovate strobiles and last into 2-3 years until ripe.
