わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地の林縁などに生え、高さは２メートルくらいになります。雌雄異株で、長楕円形の葉は全縁で互生します。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋に小さな淡黄色の花を咲かせます。葉や花に含まれるアルカロイドには神経興奮作用があり、小児マヒ後遺症の治療薬の原料となるそうです。

トウダイグサ科ヒトツバハギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Securinega suffruticosa var. japonica。英名はありません。

"Hitotsuba-hagi" (Securinega suffruticosa var. japonica) belongs to Euphorbiaceae family (the Spurge family). It is a deciduous small tree that is native to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in montane forest edges and can reach about 2 m in height. It is dioecious. The leaves are oblong, entire and alternate. The small pale yellow flowers come in the axiles from June to July. The leaves and flowers contain alkaloids which have euroexcitatory effect and used as a raw material of polio aftereffect medicine.
