わが国の北海道から本州・四国、それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、シベリア東部に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは３～６メートルになります。樹皮は灰色で平滑、葉は倒卵状楕円形で対生します。葉の縁には細かい鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、葉腋から集散花序をだし、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花弁と萼片は４個ずつあります。果実は蒴果で、秋に紅色に熟し、４裂します。

ニシキギ科ニシキギ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Euonymus macropterus。英名はありません。

"Hiroha-tsuri-bana" (Euonymus macropterus) belongs to Celastraceae (the Bittersweet family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed from Hokkaido south to Honshu, Shikoku of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China and eastern Siberia. This tree grows in mountain forests and can reach 3-6 m in height. The barks are gray and smooth. The leaves are obovate-elliptic and arranged oppositely with fine serrated at the leafblade edges. The cymes are borne in the axils and the yellowish green flowers bloom from June to July. The flower has tetramerous petals and calyces. The fruits are capsules, ripen red in fall and split open into four.
