中国が原産です。わが国へは薬用植物として渡来しました。高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は掌状複葉で、倒卵形または倒卵状長楕円形の小葉が５個つきます。小葉には粗い鋸歯があります。雌雄異株です。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に球形の散形花序をだし、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。果実は扁平な球形で、黒紫色に熟します。ふつう葉痕の下には棘があります。

ウコギ科ウコギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Eleutherococcus sieboldianus (syn. Acanthopanax sieboldianus)。英名は Fiveleaf aralia。

The Fiveleaf aralia (Eleutherococcus sieboldianus) belongs to Araliacea (the Ginseng family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to China. It was introduced into Japan as a medical plant. This tree can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are palmately compound with five obovate or obovate-oblong leaflets. The leaflets has coarsely toothed edges. It is dioecious. The globose umbels are borne at the tips of the branches, and the yellow-green flowers bloom from May to June. The fruits are flat globose and ripen black-purple. The spines are usually arranged under leaf scars.
