ブラジルの南東部が原産です。単幹で、高さは２メートルほどになります。「やし」の仲間では最も矮性です。葉は単羽状で、四方に弓なりに広がります。雌雄同株で、芳香のある黄白色の花を咲かせます。別名で「ブラジルひめやし（ブラジル姫椰子）」とも呼ばれます。

ヤシ科ヒメヤシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Syagrus weddelliana（syn. Microcoelum weddelliana）。英名はありません。

Syagrus weddilliana blongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to southeastern Brazil. This palm is a single trunk and can reach about 2 m in height. It is a most dwarf species in the palm family. The leaves are pinnate compound and sprawl. This palm is monoecious and the fragrant yellowish white flowers are borne.
