The "Hiroha-yabu-sotetsu" (Cyrtomium macrophyllum var. macrophyllum) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Niigata and Chiba prefectures of Honshu and westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, southern China, and the Himalayas. It grows along streams and gullies in mountainous areas and is 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are single-pinnate, yellow-green to green, slightly shiny, and stiffly papery. The lateral pinnae are ovate to ovate-elliptic, sickle-shaped, with 3 to 8 pairs, round at the base and without auricles. There is a large terminal pinna. The sorus is circular and scattered over the entire surface of the pinna, and the indisum is grayish-white. In Taiwanese Chinese it is called "‘å—tŠÑ眾˜n" and in Chinese "‘å—tŠÑO" (da ye guan zhong).
