わが国の固有種で、本州の中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯に生え、高さは４０〜７０センチになります。「ゆきざさ」の近縁ですが、雌雄異株です。茎には２稜があり、葉は広楕円形です。ほとんど毛がありません。６月から７月ごろ、淡緑色の雄花を円錐花序に、淡紫色の雌花を総状花序に咲かせます。別名で「みどりゆきざさ（緑雪笹）」とも呼ばれます。

ユリ科ユキザサ属の多年草で、学名は Smilacina yesoensis。英名はありません。

"Hiroha-yuki-zasa" (Smilacina yesoensis) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb and an endemic species of Japan; distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This herb grows in montane to subalpine zone and can reach 40-70 cm in height. It is dioecious. The stem is biangular. The leaves are broad elliptic and glabrous. The flowers come in June and July. The panicles are borne and bloom pale green male flowers. The racemes are borne and bloom pale purple female flowers.
