熱帯アメリカが原産です。現在では、アジアやオーストラリアに分布しています。わが国へは、明治時代に渡来しました。草地や畑、荒れ地などにふつうに生え、高さは６０〜２００センチになります。茎は直立し、緑色ときに紅色を帯びます。葉は菱状卵形で、長い葉柄があります。夏から秋にかけて、緑色でほっそりした円柱状の花穂をつけます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

ヒユ科ヒユ属の一年草で、学名は Amaranthus patulus。英名は Prince's feather、Smooth pigweed。

The Prince's feather (Amaranthus patulus) belongs to Amaranthaceae (the Amaranth family). It is an annual herb that is native to the tropical America. Nowadays, it is naturalized widely in Asia and Australia. It was introduced into Japan in the days of Meiji Era (about 160 years ago). This herb grows in grasslands, fields and waste grounds, and can reach 60-200 cm in height. The stems are erect, green and sometimes tinged rose pink. The leaves are diamond-ovate with long petioles. The green, slender and columnar spikes are borne from summer to fall. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
