メキシコの南部からグアテマラに分布しています。高さは１．２メートルほどになります。葉は大きく、長さが３０センチもあり、ベルベットのような濃緑色をしています。裏面は赤紫色です。英名はサテンに似た琥珀織りに因みます。茎に花序をつけ、赤色の斑がある淡黄白色の星形の花を咲かせます。種小名は、ベルギーの植物学者オーギュスト・ボニファス・ギースブレフトに因みます。

アカネ科ホフマニア属の常緑小低木で、学名は Hoffmannia ghiesbreghtii。英名は Taffeta plant、Strawberry splash。

The Taffeta plant (Hoffmannia ghiesbreghtii) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from southern Mexico to Guatemala. It grows to about 1.2 m tall. The leaves are large, up to 30 cm long, and dark green like velvet. The underside is reddish purple. Its English name is derived from its satin-like amber weave. It produces pale yellowish-white, star-shaped flowers with red spots in inflorescences on stems. The specific epithet is named after the Belgian botanist Auguste Boniface Giesbrecht (1810-1893).
