中国が原産です。わが国へは明治時代のはじめに渡来しました。高さは１〜２メートルほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は細長く棘状の鋸歯があります。９月から１０月ごろ、小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。中国語では「十大功勞（shi da gong lao）」と呼ばれます。

メギ科ヒイラギナンテン属の常緑低木で、学名は Mahonia fortunei。英名は Chinese mahonia。

The Chinese mahonia (Mahonia fortunei) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to China. It was introduced into Japan at the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912. This tree grows up to 1-2 m. The leaves are pinnate compound with elongated and spiky serrated leaflets. The small yellow flowers bloom from September to October. In Chinese, they are called "十大功勞" (shi da gong lao).
