The Hohenbergia stellata belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Trinidad-Tobago to Venezuela, Curacao and northeastern Brazil. It grows in moist tropical biomes, terrestrial or epiphytic, 90 to 120 cm tall. The leaves are broad linear, basal in a rosette shape. The flower stalks grow to form an inflorescence with red bracts clustered at each node, and reddish-purple flowers are produced inside the bracts. The inflorescence has sharp spines. The genus is named after Paul Wilhelm (1797-1860), a German botanist who traveled to the Americas under the alias Baron Hohenberg.
