"Hosoba-kansuge" (Carex temnolepis) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed on the Sea of Japan side of Honshu in Japan, from Iwate and Yamagata prefectures and westward to Hyogo Prefecture. It grows in moist forests and on slopes in mountainous areas and grows 20 to 40 cm tall. It has short rhizomes, no stolons, and leaves in dense clusters. The leaves are linear, 3-6 mm wide, and the basal sheath is dark red. The acrogyrous spikelet is male and 2 to 4 cm long. The pleurogerous spikelets are female, 3-5 in number, short, cylindrical, and erect. The post-flowering utricles have distinct stinging hairs on the edge of the beak.
