The Sweetshoot bamboo (Phyllostachys dulcis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bamboo that is native to central and eastern China, from southern Jiangsu to northern Zhejiang. It grows quickly, with a diameter of 7 to 8 cm of culm and a height of about 12 m. The leaves are large and drooping, with white annulations on the nodes. The bamboo shoots, which appear in late April, are edible without bitterness. In Chinese, it is called "白哺鶏竹" (bai bu ji zhu).
