わが国の各地をはじめ、ユーラシア大陸や北アメリカに広く分布しています。夏から秋にかけて、林内や道ばたに群生します。子実体は擬宝珠形で、頂部には円錐状からいぼ状の棘があります。別名で「きつねのちゃぶくろ（狐の茶袋）」とも呼ばれます。

ホコリタケ科ホコリタケ属のキノコ類で、学名は Lycoperdon perlatum。英名は Gem-studded puffball。

The Gem-studded puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum) belongs to Lycoperdaceae (the True puffball family). It is a mushroom that is widely distributed throughout Japan, Eurasia, and North America. It grows in clusters in forests and along roadsides from summer to fall. The fruiting bodies are "giboushi"-shaped (meaning baluster finial), with conical to wart-like spines at the top. It is also known as "Kitsune-no-chabukuro" (meaning "fox's tea bag") in Japan.
