わが国の小笠原諸島の固有種です。山地の湿った岩肌や樹幹に着生し、高さは１０〜４０センチになります。根茎はやや短く這い、葉を密に出します。葉柄は細く、長さは葉身の４分の１から３分の１です。ソーラス（胞子嚢群）は円形で、葉身の上部、中助の両脇に一列ずつ並びます。和名は、主側脈がはっきりした葉を、「くり（栗）」の葉に準えたことに因みます。

ウラボシ科ノキシノブ属のシダ植物で、学名は Lepisorus boninensis。英名はありません。

"Hosoba-kuriha-ran" (Lepisorus boninensis) belongs to the Polypodiaceae family. It is a perennial fern that is endemic to the Ogasawara Islands in Japan. This fern grows on moist rocks and tree trunks in the mountains, reaching a height of 10 to 40 cm. The rhizome crawls a little short, leaving the leaves dense. The petiole is thin and one-fourth to one-third the length of the blade. The sori (sporangia) are circular and are arranged in a row at the top of the leaf blade and on both sides of midvein. The Japanese name is based on the fact that the leaves with clear main and lateral veins are similar to the leaves of chestnuts.
