中国の東南部および香港が原産です。山地に生え、高さは２〜３メートルになります。葉は卵形で、互生します。１月から２月ごろ、ちょうど旧正月のころに、ベル形の花を下垂して咲かせます。花冠は紅色と白色のツートンカラーで、蝋細工のような光沢があります。中国名では、「吊鐘（Hanging bell）」と呼ばれます。

ツツジ科ドウダンツツジ属の常緑低木で、学名は Enkianthus quinqueflorus。英名は Chinese New Year flower。

The Chinese New Year flower (Enkianthus quinqueflorus) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evregreen tree that is native to south-eastern China and Hong Kong. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 2-3 m in height. The leaves are ovate and alternate. The hanging bell-shaped flowers bloom in Janurary and February; near the Chinese New Year. The corolla is two-color, rose pink and white, and has ceroplastics-like burnish. The Chinese name is "吊鐘 (Hanging bell)".
