アメリカの南西部、テキサス州からカリフォルニア州それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。乾燥した平原や丘陵、砂漠などに生え、高さは６メートルほどになります。よく分枝して潅木状になります。樹皮は暗褐色で厚く、割れ目が入ります。小枝の肥大した節には１対の棘がつきます。葉は偶数羽状複葉で、狭長楕円形の小葉が７〜１７対あります。春から夏にかけて、総状花序を下垂させ、芳香のある淡黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は莢果で、夏に熟します。南西部に住むアメリカ先住民は、この莢を食用にしたそうです。

The honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in the southwestern United States, from Texas to California and northern Mexico. This grows on dry plains, hills and deserts and is about 6 m high. It branches well and becomes shrub-like. The bark is dark brown and thick with cracks. The enlarged nodes of the twigs have a pair of spines. The leaves are pari-pinnate compound with 7 to 17 pairs of narrow ovate leaflets. The racemes hang down and bloom fragrant pale yellow flowers from spring to summer. The fruits are pods and ripen in the summer. The native Americans living in the southwest have eaten this pod.
