The lace fern (Sphenomeris chinensis) belongs to the Lindsaeaceae family. It is a perennial fern that is native from Tohoku district of Honshu south to Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as East Asia, Polynesia to Madagascar. This fern grows gregariously on sunny dry slopes. The rhizomatous roots are short and creeping. The leaves are yellowish green to green, soft leathery, and tri-pinnnate or quatri-pinnnate. They are tinged magenta in fall. The petioles are yellowish green to green, and brown at the base. The sori are scattered along the periphery of pinnae.
