The Cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from northern Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, and the cold regions and polar areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It grows in peatlands, reaching a height of 10 to 25 cm. It spreads by extending thin underground stolons. The leaves are palmately lobed into 5 to 7 segments. It is dioecious. From June to July, it blooms with white, five-petaled flowers at the tips of its branches. The fruit is an amber-colored aggregate fruit. In Northern Europe, it is used for fresh consumption and processing. Its Japanese name originates from its discovery in the Horomui district on the outskirts of Iwamizawa City, Hokkaido.
