わが国の奄美諸島や小笠原諸島をはじめ、アジアやアフリカの熱帯・亜熱帯地域に分布しています。熱帯雨林のような大きな樹木で被われた薄暗い場所に生え、高さは５メートルほどになります。葉は羽状で光沢があり、羽片は幅１センチ、長さ１３〜１６センチほどです。別名で「なんようりゅうびんたい（南洋竜鱗帯）」とも呼ばれます。台湾華語では「蘭嶼觀音座蓮」です。

リュウビンタイ科リュウビンタイ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Angiopteris palmiformis (syn. Angiopteris evecta)。英名は Elephant fern。

The Elephant fern (Angiopteris palmiformis) belongs to the family Marattiaceae. It is an evergreen perennial pteridophyte that is distributed to the Amami Islands and the Ogasawara Islands of Japan, tropical and sub-tropical areas of Asia and Africa. This fern grows in dark dense forests and can reach about 5 m in height. The leaves are glossy and pinnate. The pinnae are about 1 cm wide and 13-16 cm long. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "蘭嶼觀音座蓮".
