わが国の本州、群馬県から兵庫県それに四国に分布しています。山地の谷間や渓流沿いに生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。樹皮は暗緑色で滑らか、縦縞が入ります。葉は卵形または広卵形で、浅く３〜５裂します。葉柄は、赤みが帯びます。５月から６月ごろ、総状花序をだし、小さな淡緑白色花を咲かせます。葉は秋には鮮黄色やオレンジ色、または赤色に紅葉します。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉高木で、学名は Acer capillipes。英名は Red snakebark maple。

The red snakebark maple (Acer capillipes) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Japan and distributed from Gunma prefecture west to Hyogo prefecture of Honshu and Shikoku islands. This tree grows in mountain valleys or stream banks and can reach 10-15 m in height. The bark is smooth, dark green with vertical stripes. The leaves are ovate or broad ovate with 3-5 lobes. The petioles are tinged reddish. The racemes are borne and the small pale greenish white flowers bloom from May to June. The leaves are turning bright yellow, orange or red in fall.
