ヨーロッパが原産です。牧草や緑化植物として世界中で用いられ、各地で帰化しています。わが国へは、明治時代初期に導入されました。水分が多い土壌を好み、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は光沢のある濃緑色で線形、葉身の幅は２〜４ミリです。初夏から夏にかけて、１５〜２５センチの穂をつけます。小穂の長さは１〜２センチで、通常は穎に芒はありません。別名で、「ペレニアルライグラス」とも呼ばれます。

イネ科ドクムギ属の多年草で、学名は Lolium perenne。英名は Perennial ryegrass。

The Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is widely cultivated as a pasture or a afforestation plant, and naturalised around the world. It was introduced into Japan in the day of early Meiji Era (1868-1912). This grass prefers moist soils, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are grossy dark green, linear and 1-2 cm across. The 15-25 cm long spikes are borne from early summer to mid summer. The spikelet is 1-2 cm long, and the lemma typically has not arista.
