北アメリカの大部分とシベリアに分布しています。攪乱地や放棄地、草原などに生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。また群生します。初夏から盛夏にかけて、長い芒のある淡緑色の小麦の穂をだします。穂は赤色や紫色に彩られ、時間が経つにつれて淡い黄褐色に褪せてきます。

The Foxtail barley (Hordeum jubatum) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual or short-lived perennial that is distributed to most areas of North America and Siberia. This grass grows in disturbed sites, waste areas and fields, and it can reach 30-50 cm in height. It is also clump-forming. It produces long-bristled, pale green wheatear in early and mid summer. They are flushed with red or purple and fade to light tan as they age.
