わが国の各地をはじめ、東アジアから東南アジアに広く分布しています。山地の林内や道ばたなどのやや湿ったところに生え、高さは１０センチほどになります。「すぎ（杉）」の幼苗に似たかたちです。葉は披針形で、幅は１〜２ミリほどです。縁には細かい鋸歯があります。胞子嚢群は上部の葉腋につき、秋に黄色く熟します。常緑性で、ふつうは珠芽（むかご）によって増えます。

ヒカゲノカズラ科ヒカゲノカズラ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Lycopodium serratum var. serratum。英名はありません。

"Hosoba-tougeshiba" (Lycopodium serratum var. serratum) belongs to the family Lycopodiaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is widely distributed throughout Japan and from East to Southeast Asia. It grows in damp places such as mountain forests and along roadsides, and grows to a height of about 10 cm. It looks like a young seedling of the Japanese cedar. The leaves are lanceolate and 1-2 mm wide. The margins are finely serrated. The sporangia are attached to the upper leaf axils and ripen to yellow in fall. It is evergreen and usually multiplies by propagules.
