わが国の固有種で、本州の中部地方以北から北海道に分布しています。高山帯の砂礫地や岩場に生え、高さは２〜８センチになります。よく分枝して広がり、葉は線形で３脈があります。７月から８月ごろ、枝先に直径５ミリほどの小さな白い花を咲かせます。花弁と萼片はほぼ同じ長さです。別名で「こばのつめくさ（小葉の爪草）」とも呼ばれます。

ナデシコ科タカネツメクサ属の多年草で、学名は Minuartia verna var. japonica。英名はありません。

"Hosoba-tsume-kusa" (Minuartia verna var. japonica) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This herb grows in alpine screes or rocky places, and can reach 2-8 cm in height. The stems are much branched, the leaves are linear and three-veined. It blooms small white flowers, about 5 mm across, atop of stems from July to August. The petals and sepals are about the same length. It is also called "Kobano-tsume-kusa".
