The "Hourai-aoi" (Asarum macranthum) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Taiwan. It grows on forest floors and forest edges throughout the region, reaching a height of about 10 cm. The leaves are oblong to triangular, with a heart-shaped base that is deeply lobed. The leaf surface is green with white spots and sparsely hairy. This species exhibits relatively high variation. From January to March, it produces large purplish-brown flowers at the base. The calyx tube opening has white markings. It has three sepals, characterized by strongly undulating margins. There are twelve stamens. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "大花細辛".
