南アメリカのギアナが原産です。高さは２０〜３０メートルほどになります。現在では熱帯地方の各地で公園樹として植栽されています。葉は長楕円形で互生します。地面に近い幹から、直接長い花梗をだして、直径１０〜１５センチの芳香のある赤色からサーモンピンクの花を咲かせます。果実は２０センチほどの球形で、砲丸のようなかたちをしています。臭気があり食用には向かないそうです。別名で「ほうがんぼく（砲丸木）」とも呼ばれます。

サガリバナ科ホウガンノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Couroupita guianensis。英名は Cannon ball tree。

The cannon ball tree belongs to Lecythidaceae (the Brazil nut family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to Guiana of South America. This tree can reach 20-30 m in height and are cultivated in tropical areas widely nowadays. The leaves are oblong and alternate. Fragrant red to salmon pink flowers 10-15 in diameter come on the peduncles which borne directly from the middle stems. The fruits are globose about 20 cm in daimeter, look like cannon ball. This fruit has a bad smell and uneatable.
