北アメリカが原産です。わが国では１９１０年に大阪の淀川河畔で帰化が確認されました。現在は各地に広がっています。日当たりのよい湿った荒地や河原などに生え、高さは５０〜１２０センチになります。葉は線形で基部はすこし茎を抱きます。花序の枝は３０°〜６０°で出開します。８月から１０月ごろ、白色または淡紫色の５ミリくらいの小さな花を咲かせます。冠毛は筒状花よりも長く、花後にはさらに伸びて総苞の外に突き出ます。

キク科シオン属の一年草で、学名は Aster subulatus (syn. Symphyotrichum subulatum)。英名は Annual aster。

The annual aster (Aster subulatus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It was confirmed to naturalize in the reverfront of the Yodo River on Osaka prefecture in 1910. Now it spreads over land. This herb grows in sunny, wettish barrens and dry riverbeds, and can reach 50-120 cm in height. The leaves are linear and somewhat enfold stems. The branches of the inflorescence open at 30-60 degrees. White to pale purple small flowerheads bloom in August to October. The pappi are longer than the tubular flowers, they go further long and protrude from the bracts after flowering.
