中国南部からマレー半島、インドが原産です。わが国へは江戸時代に中国から渡来しました。茎は直立して高さ５０〜８０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で鋸歯があり、先端が尖ります。７月から９月ごろ、葉腋に赤色やピンク色、薄紫色、白色などの花を咲かせます。別名で「つまくれない（爪紅）」とも呼ばれますが、江戸時代に爪を染めて遊んだことに因みます。

ツリフネソウ科ツリフネソウ属の一年草で、学名は Impatiens balsamina。英名は Rose balsam。

The rose balsam (Impatiens balsamina) belongs to Balsaminaceae (the Balsam family). It is an annual herb that is native from southern China to the Malay Peninsula and India. This herb was introduced into Japan via China in Edo Era (about 250 years ago). The stem is erect and can reach 50-80 cm in height. The leaves are oblong with acute tips and toothed edges. The red, pink, pale purple or white flowers bloom in the axils from July to September.
