ひょうたんのき (瓢箪の木)

熱帯アメリカおよび西インド諸島が原産です。高さは７．５〜１５メートルになります。葉は楕円形で、幹や枝の節に集まってつきます。春先、節に淡い緑白色の花を咲かせます。蝙蝠媒花です。果実は成長すると、直径３０センチほどの球形になります。果肉は薬用に、また殻は容器やスコップなどに利用されます。別名で「ふくべのき（瓢の木）」とも呼ばれます。 |

The Calabash tree (Crescentia cujete) belongs to Bignoniaceae (the Trumpet creeper family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to tropical America and the West Indies. This ree can reach 7.5-15 m in height. Leaves are elliptic and fascicled on the nodes of stems and branches. Pale greenish white flowers come in spring. This is a bat-pollinated flower. Fruits ripen globose about 30 cm in diameter. The pulp of fruits are used as medicines, and the shells are used for vessels or shovels. |
