アフリカが原産です。高さは１〜１．５メートルほどになり、よく分枝します。水はけが良く日当たりの良いところを好みます。８月から４月ごろ、穂状花序に薄紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠は円筒形で、先端が大きく唇状に裂けています。

キツネノマゴ科ヒポエステス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Hypoestes aristata。英名は Ribbon bush。

The ribbon bush (Hypoestes aristata) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Ruellia family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Africa. This herb is much branched and it can reach 1-1.5 m in height. It prefers sunny, well-drained soil. The pale purple flowers bloom in the spikes from August to April. The corolla is cylinderical with large labiate-divided tips.
