アフリカ南部のボツワナ、ジンバブエ、アンゴラそれに南アフリカに分布しています。明るく乾燥した草原に生え、高さは２０～５０センチになります。茎や葉は、白色の伏毛に被われます。根生葉は披針形です。６月から８月ごろ、鮮やかな黄色の花を咲かせます。果実は、長さ直径ともに５～７ミリの蒴果です。

ユリ科コキンバイザサ属の多年草で、学名は Hypoxis nitida (syn. Hypoxis obtusa)。英名は Star grass。

The star grass (Hypoxis nitida) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southern Africa; Botswana, Zimbabwe, Angola and South Africa. This herb grows in open dry grasslands and it can reach 20-50 cm in height. The stems and leaves are covered with matted white hairs. The basal leaves are lanceolate. The bright yellow flowers bloom from June to August. The fruits are capsule 5-7 mm long and across.
