マダガスカル島が原産です。高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は卵形で互生し、ピンク色や白色の斑が入ります。一年を通して、上部の葉腋から花茎を伸ばして穂状花序をつけ、小さな紅紫色の唇形花を咲かせます。和名では「そばかすそう（雀斑草）」と呼ばれます。

キツネノマゴ科ヒポエステス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Hypoestes phyllostachya。英名は Polka-dot plant。

The Polka-dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Madagascar. It grows 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are ovate and alternate, with pink or white patches. Throughout the year, the flower stalks grow out from the upper leaf axils and produce spikes, which produce small reddish-purple labiate flowers. It is called "sobakasu-so" (fleckles grass) in Japanese.
