地中海沿岸に分布しています。茎には４稜があり基部は木質化します。高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は線状披針形で対生し、葉柄はありません。７月から８月ごろ、青紫色の花を咲かせます。まれに白花もあります。葉には弱いハッカの香りがあり、ポテトや豆スープのような素朴な料理の香りづけに利用されます。和名では「やなぎはっか（柳薄荷）」と呼ばれます。

The hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the coastal area of the Mediterranean. This herb can reach 30-60 cm in height and the stems are square, woody at the base. The leavese are linear-lanceolate, sessile and opposite. The bluish-purple, seldom white flowers come in July and August. The leaves have weak minty aroma and used for rustic dishes like potato or bean soup.
