わが国の九州、宮崎県と鹿児島県に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは１０センチほどになります。根茎は太く、横に伸びます。「ばいかおうれん」のように匐枝を出さないのが特徴です。葉は掌状複葉で、５個の小葉があります。２月から３月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして、白色の花を１個咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは萼片です。環境省のレッドリストでは絶滅危惧ⅠB類（EN）に分類されています。

キンポウゲ科オウレン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Coptis minamitaniana。英名はありません。

The "Hyuga-ohren" (Coptis minamitaniana) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed in Kyushu, Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures in Japan. It grows in forests in mountainous areas and grows to a height of about 10 cm. The rhizome is thick and grows horizontally. It is characterized by the fact that it does not spread its branches like "Baika-ohren". From February to March, it grows a flower stalk and produces a single white flower. The sepals look like petals. It is classified as Endangered (EN) on the Red List of Japan's Ministry of the Environment.
