アメリカ西南部のアリゾナ州からカリフォルニア州それにメキシコ北部に分布しています。乾燥した半砂漠地帯に生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。１科１属１種です。雌雄異株で、幹は直立してよく分枝します。葉は長楕円形で、青緑色をしています。春、枝先の小さな花序に黄色い花を咲かせます。この果実から採れるのがホホバオイルで、すぐれた保湿効果があるため、何百年も前から肌や髪に塗って利用されてきました。

ホホバ科ホホバ属の常緑低木で、学名は Simmondsia chinensis。英名は Jojoba。

The jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) belongs to Simmondsiaceae (the Jojoba family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed to the south-western United States; Arizona, California, and northern Mexico. This tree grows in arid semi-desert areas, and can reach about 2m in height. It is the only species in the family Simmondsiaceae and the genus Simmondsia. It is also dioecious. The stems are erect and much branched. The leaves are oblong and bluish green. The yellow flowers bloom in the small clusters at the terminal branches in spring. The fruits yield the jojoba oil, which is moisture-rich and has been used as a moisturizing emulsion for skins and hairs from over the centuries ago.
