南アメリカの北部、ギアナ地方に分布しています。熱帯雨林に生え、高さは１０〜２０メートルにもなります。葉は掌状複葉で、長楕円形の小葉が５〜９個あります。芳香のある大きな緑白色の花を咲かせます。果実は楕円形で、中にある種子はデンプン質が豊富で食用にされます。この種子は「ギアナくり（ギアナ栗）」とか「カイエンナット」とも呼ばれます。「カイエン」は、フランス領ギアナの首都「カイエンヌ（Cayenne）」に因みます。

パンヤ科パキラ属の常緑高木で、学名は Pachira aquatica。英名は Water chestnut、Guiana chestnut、Cayenne nut。

The Water chestnut (Pachira aquatica) belongs to the family Bombacaceae. It is a tall evergreen tree that is found in the Guiana region of northern South America. It grows in tropical rainforests and can reach 10 to 20 m in height. It has palmately compound leaves with 5 to 9 oblong leaflets. It produces large, fragrant, greenish-white flowers. The fruit is elliptic, and the seeds inside are rich in starch and edible. The seeds are also called "Guiana chestnuts" or "cayenne nuts". The name "cayenne" is a reference to Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana.
