マダガスカルの西部に分布しています。低地の開けた落葉樹林に生え、高さは１〜３．５メートルになります。幹は亜球形で、上部には円筒形の枝が数本あります。葉は卵形から卵円形で緑色、革質で、枝の先端につきます。葉の表は滑らかで、葉脈が白く目立ちます。花茎を伸ばして淡紅色の花を咲かせます。

キョウチクトウ科パキポジウム属の常緑低木で、学名は Pachypodium baronii。英名は Madagascar palm、Bontaka。

The Madagascar palm (Pachypodium baronii) belongs Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in the western part of Madagascar. It grows in open deciduous forests in lowlands and grows 1-3.5 m tall. The trunk is subglobose with several cylindrical branches on top. The leaves are ovate to ovate-round, green, leathery, and attached to the tips of the branches. The leaf surface is smooth with conspicuous white veins. The flower stalks are elongated and produce light red flowers.
