マダガスカル原産です。乾燥にたいへん強く、高さは８〜１０メートルくらいになります。こん棒のような銀色の幹には鋭い棘があり、先端に細い葉を叢生しています。白い花が咲きますが、大きな株にならないと開花しないそうです。和名の「ああそうかい（亜阿相界）」は、マダガスカル島がアジアとアフリカの境界にあることから。

キョウチクトウ科パキポジウム属の常緑低木で、学名は Pachypodium geayi。英名は Madagascar palm。

The Madagascar palm (Pachypodium geayi) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Madagascar. This tree is tolerant of drought, and can reach 8-10 m in height. The stems are silvery, club-shaped with acute spines, and clump narrow leaves at stem apices. The white flowers bloom when mature.
