マダガスカル原産です。乾燥にたいへん強く、高さは８〜１０メートルくらいになります。こん棒のような銀色の幹には鋭い棘があり、先端に細い葉を叢生しています。白い花が咲きますが、大きな株にならないと開花しないそうです。和名の「ああそうかい（亜阿相界）」は、マダガスカル島がアジアとアフリカの境界にあることから。

キョウチクトウ科パキポジウム属の常緑低木で、学名は Pachypodium geayi。英名は Madagascar palm。

The Madagascar palm (Pachypodium geayi) belongs to Apocynaceae (the Dogbane family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Madagascar. This tree is tolerant of drought, and can reach 8-10 m in height. The stems are silvery, club-shaped with acute spines, and clump narrow leaves at stem apices. The white flowers bloom when mature. The Japanese name "亜阿相界" comes from the fact that Madagascar is located on the border between Asia and Africa.
