ブラジルが原産です。熱帯から亜熱帯地域にまばらに分布しています。高さは9〜18メートルになり、滑らかな幹は灰緑色です。しばしば幹の基部が膨らみます。葉は掌状複葉で、小葉は5〜9個あります。茎の先に長い花柄をのばして、大きな白い花を咲かせます。ふつう「パキラ」と呼ばれ、観葉植物として利用されるのは本種です。

The French peanut (Pachira glabra) belongs to the Bombacaceae family. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Brazil. This tree is scattered in tropical and semi-tropical areas. It grows up to a height of 9-18 m. It has smooth grayish green trunk and is often swollen at the base. The leaves are palmately compound with 5-9 leaflets. The large white flowers bloom on the long peduncles atop of stems. It is commonly called "Pachira", and this species is used as a foliage plant.
