The Pacific madrona (Arbutus menziesii) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is found in western North America, from British Columbia in Canada to California in the Unite States. It grows along the coast and grows 10 to 25 m tall. The bark is thin and orange-red, peeling off at maturity to a shiny greenish silver color. The leaves are elliptic, thick, leathery, and evergreen, but some of the second year leaves turn from orange to red and are deciduous. It produces small, white to pink, bell-shaped flowers in the spring and red berries in the fall. These berries form hooked spines when dry, which are hooked and dispersed by large animals.
