The gold coin (Pallenis maritima) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a subshrub that is native to the western Mediterranean region. This subshrub grows on sand dunes, cliffs, and rocky shores, and can reach up to 40 cm tall and about 1 m wide. The leaves are narrowly obovate-spathulate and sparsely to densely villous. The golden-yellow flower heads up to 4 cm wide, with showy, finely toothed ray flowers bloom abundantly in spring through early summer.
