アメリカの南部やキューバ、バハマ諸島が原産です。海岸平野に生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。葉は、数多くの小葉のある丸い中肋掌状葉で、半径は２．５メートルあります。葉は、典型的な掌状または扇状とは異なり、明確なコスタ（中肋）がありますが、小葉は掌状の葉のように放射状に配置されています。果実は黒色の核果で、長さは１．３センチです。この樹木は、非常に耐塩性があります。

ヤシ科サバル属の常緑低木で、学名は Sabal palmetto。英名は Cabbage palmetto。

The Cabbage palmetto (Sabal palmetto) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the southern United States, as well as Cuba and the Bahamas. This tree grows in the coastal plains and up to a height of 20 m. The leaves are rounded, costapalmate fan of numerous leaflets, up to 2.5 m in radius. The leaf has a definite costa (midrib) unlike the typical palmate or fan leaf, but the leaflets are arranged radially like in a palmate leaf. The fruit is a black drupe about 1.3 cm long. This tree is extremely salt-tolerant.
